Best Toilet Paper for Septic Systems in 2022
Not all toilet paper is “septic safe,” even if it is described as such. Because of the way a septic system works, toilet paper must decompose along with all of the other waste that ends up there. Additional solids flushed down the toilet decompose into sludge, which can build up over time. A professional septic system pumping company can help to avoid the backup.
Picking a toilet paper that doesn't contribute to that backup can help keep your septic system from backing up frequently, saving you money in the long run.
In addition to decomposition, there are several additional factors that you may want to consider. Read along to learn more about what to think when choosing a toilet paper brand when living with a septic system in 2022.
What Is a Septic System?
When you flush the toilet, waste, water, and toilet paper flow through the drain pipe and into your septic tank. Once in the septic system, bacteria break down the waste into sludge. This sludge is expelled into the bottom of the tank, while the water (which is purified) is sent out into the ground by way of a series of pipes.
Types of Toilet Paper Not to Flush Down the Toilet
Before we dig into the toilet paper that is appropriate to flush into your septic tank, it is important to know what should not be flushed. The type of toilet paper can directly affect how your septic system works, and it is important that it breaks down quickly and settles to the bottom of the tank.
For one, flushable wipes should be avoided, even though their name says otherwise. Flushable wipes do not disintegrate in our pipes as they are made from synthetic materials such as plastics or polyester. Both of these materials do not break down well and can end up clogging pipes and, ultimately, your septic system. In some cases, cities have spent millions of dollars a year to address damages to sewer pipes.
In addition to flushable wipes, be on the lookout for these features in toilet papers that you should stay away from:
- Multi-Ply
- Quilted Toilet Paper
- Scented Toilet Paper
- Colored or Decorated Toilet Paper
Septic Safe Toilet Paper
There are plenty of options that are “septic safe” toilet paper. These products dissolve when they hit the water. Toilet paper brands typically have markings that denote that they are safe to use in septic systems. The National Sanitation Foundation, a nonprofit that tests health and environmental materials, certifies septic safe brands of toilet paper with a seal.
Biodegradable Toilet Paper
Some brands of toilet paper simply disintegrate when it contacts water. Biodegradable toilet paper requires less water when breaking down. Because it dissolves quickly, it turns into many small particles that won't collect and clog your system.
There is a downside when using biodegradable toilet paper. While thicker toilet paper is softer and more robust, that is not the case with biodegradable toilet paper. In addition to not being as soft, biodegradable toilet paper is more expensive.
Recycled Toilet Paper
Recycled toilet paper is another great option for use with a septic system. The fibers are easy to break apart, allowing for the recycled paper to not contribute to sludge buildup. Recycled paper is bleach-free, which keeps the natural bacteria in your septic tank healthy.
