Septic Tank Service NearbyIf you are a lucky homeowner in the Asheville area, you know how important it is to keep your home in tip-top shape. There are so many things to keep up with to ensure that your home is taken care of. Not only is it important to take care of your home’s systems for you and your family’s health and safety, but it is vital for keeping the equity of your home growing over time.

An unkempt home will lead to a loss in value over time. One very important thing to keep up with throughout your time as a homeowner is the septic tank.

What Is A Septic Tank?

Your septic tank is one of the most important systems in your home. If you are not connected to the city sewer, your waste has to go somewhere. Septic tanks hold and separate waste so that wastewater can be integrated back into the environment safely.

While there are various septic tank systems, they usually work the same way. As waste exits your home through pipes, it enters the septic tank, where it gets to work.

As the waste enters the tank, it begins to separate into three distinct layers:

  • Scum Layer: Lighter materials, such as oils and grease, float to the top and form the scum layer.
  • Liquid Effluent: The middle layer consists of partially clarified wastewater.
  • Sludge Layer: Heavier solids settle at the bottom and form the sludge layer.

Over time anaerobic bacteria begin to break down the organic matter in the sludge layer, which helps reduce the volume of the solids in the tank. This plays a crucial role in decomposing the waste. After the separation process, the liquid effluent flows out of the septic tank through a filter into a drain field. This drain field is a series of perforated pipes that are buried.

As the process works through the tank into the drain field, the water slowly gets filtered and cleaned so that it can eventually rejoin with the groundwater supply. The septic tank process helps recycle water back into the ground so that it maintains the natural hydrological cycle.
